Questions

Will my electricity bill actually go down because of the VAT cut?

Not necessarily. VAT has been removed from electricity from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, but the overall price cap has still risen by 4% because gas wholesale prices remain high. The two changes largely offset each other, so most households won't see a lower total bill.

Does the price cap mean I'll pay a fixed amount?

No. The price cap limits the rate per unit and the standing charge that suppliers can charge on a variable tariff — it is not a cap on your total bill. If you use more energy, your bill will still be higher, whatever the cap level is.

Is switching to a fixed tariff worth it?

It depends on the specific rates offered to you compared with the current cap, and any exit fees on your existing deal. Fixed tariffs have been available below the cap for some households, but you need to compare the actual unit rates and standing charges yourself rather than relying on headline marketing.

I'm on a prepayment meter — does any of this apply to me?

Yes, the same principles for reading your bill, tracking usage and reducing consumption apply. Rates can differ from Direct Debit customers, so check your specific tariff with your supplier and ask whether switching payment method could reduce your rate.

Is this planner printable?

Yes, it's designed to be printed and filled in by hand, or completed digitally if you prefer — the tracking sheet in particular works best printed and pinned somewhere visible.
